Most Windows computers have their own button for taking screenshots (ImpPt), but what happens when a static image is not enough? Basically, if you couldn’t capture the screen, it would be impossible to do tutorials, stream a game, or even film a class.
Using an external camera is difficult and complex, which is why we have compiled a number of internal methods and external programs that will be able to do the work for you. It may not be as simple as simply pressing ‘ImpPt’, but these tools are more than capable of getting the job done.
Method 1: Windows Internal Screen Recorder (via XBOX application)
Windows 10 has a built-in screen recorder that you can use without having to install any other programs. But it is only available if you have a graphics card with Intel Quick Sync H.260 (2011 or later models), Nvidia NVENC (2012 or later models), or AMD VCE (2012 or later models, except for Oland). Therefore, if you have some problems, you should verify that your computer has the indicated specifications.
Those who have the appropriate hardware can proceed as follows (although it is a function designed for gamers, it can be used with any screen material).
The first thing you should do is press the key combination WINDOWS + G. Then select “Yes, this is a game” from the pop-up box.
From then on, recording is very simple: With the red button on the bar, you can start and stop recording, or use the configuration menu to define an automatic cut-off time for the record.
When done, the video will be saved as an MP4 file in your Videos \ Captures folder. For more information on how to use the game bar to record your screen, you can check out this youtube video:
Method 2: Use Microsoft PowerPoint
Do you have PowerPoint on your computer? So, in addition to making presentations, you can also take advantage of this program to record the screen.
Typically the screen recording will be embedded in a slide but you can also choose to store it as a file. We’ll show you how to accomplish it down below.
First, open Microsoft PowerPoint, select the Insert tab, and then Screen Recording.
Now, with the Area Selection tool, you must choose which part of your screen you are going to record. If you use Office 2016 or later, you can also use the shortcut WINDOWS + SHIFT + A. Click and drag the floating cross to select the registration area. If you don’t want to record audio, press WINDOWS + SHIFT + U to remove it.
When you’re ready, hit the Record button.
The small control panel will disappear if it is not docked, but you can make it reappear by moving the mouse to the top edge of the screen.
When you’re done, hit the record button again. The video will be automatically embedded in the slide and you can select FILE> SAVE AS to store the created presentation. If you just want to save the video, choose FILE> SAVE MEDIA AS, and then select the destination folder and name of the video.
Note: If you are using PowerPoint 2013, you will need to follow some special instructions to record and store your video. The official instructional may be found here.
Method 3: OBS Studio
If you are not a PowerPoint lover or if you want a dedicated tool for regular screen recording, OBS Studio is an excellent video recording software. It is open-source, does not leave watermarks or limit the time of content, and also offers a variety of powerful editing features. It also supports live streaming at 60FPS, making it a very popular option.
But before you start, you should download OBS Studio from its website. And since it is a very complete program, you will also want to make some adjustments and previous configurations.
That is, you will need to check all the settings, such as automatic recording on / off, streaming settings, bit rate, audio sample rate, keyboard shortcuts, and file name format, among others. What you choose will depend on where you are going to show your videos and the capabilities of your computer.
On the other hand, OBS Studio also offers an automatic configuration wizard that will choose a few things for you.
Once the setup is done, you can start with a basic screenshot. First, put OBS in “Studio Mode” so that the left side says ‘preview’ and the right side says ‘live’.
To set up a screenshot, select Sources> +> Window Capture> Create New. Next, in the drop-down list, select the window you want to record.
This should place your window in the “preview” panel. If it looks the way you want, click on the transition in the center of the screen. If that doesn’t work, drag the red corners until the preview fits the size you want.
Then click Start Recording and then Stop Recording to create your video. Videos are stored by default as flv files in the user / videos folder, although you can modify the storage path and format from the settings.
OBS Studio is a very powerful program and possibly one of the best free programs out there for creating screen recordings or streaming. Its features go far beyond the simple configuration that we show here. But the program unfortunately does not have many tutorials, so you will have to look for most of the resources in the online community. For streamers, a good starting point could be this YouTube tutorial.
Method 4: FlashBack Express / FlashBack Pro
If you are looking for a dedicated software that allows you to record and edit, FlashBack could be a great choice. Its free version will allow you to take some basic captures, while the paid option will allow you to use the editing tools, store in different formats, or even add special content to your videos. This is also one of the best screen recorder programs that we have reviewed.
Here’s how to get started with FlashBack. First, you will need to download FlashBack from its website (select “Express” if you want to get started for free).
An exe file will download. So if you feel uncomfortable with this procedure, maybe you should go for another program. If not, click to start the installation.
When you access the home screen, select “Record your screen”
In this step you will be able to change some recording settings, such as the audio source and the size of the capture.
In addition, you can decide if you want to capture a window, a part, or the entire screen. If you select a part, you will see red crosses that you can drag to create your selection.
Then hit “Record” and do whatever you need to do. When you are recording, you should see a small bar at the bottom with the “pause” and “stop” buttons. This bar can be hidden or displayed at any time.
When you’re done, you’ll be prompted to review, discard, or save the recording. In Express, you will see a limited editor that will allow you to trim and cut the video according to your needs. Users of the Pro version will have a more complete video editor.
When you have finished editing, you can use the “Save” function to save the video in the program’s specific format. Or you can also use the export function to save it as a normal file.
There are several formats available, such as WMV, AVI, and MPEG4. On the other hand, you can also select File> Share to export your video directly to YouTube.
FlashBack Express is a simple solution with great potential for screen recording and editing. Getting started is really very simple, but if you want to get more out of it, you can also purchase the pro license for one time only (there is no monthly subscription).
Method 5: APowerSoft Online Screen Recorder
If you really prefer a web-based alternative, APowerSoft offers an excellent online recorder. Although the name is somewhat misleading: because when testing the software we discovered that a small package must be downloaded. However, the functionality is fully developed on the website.
To use this tool, you must enter the APowerSoft Screen Recorder website. And once there, you just have to click on the “Start Recording” button in the middle of the screen.
At this point you must accept all the requests you see, such as “Open APowerSoft Online Launcher”. If you decide not to create an account, before you start you will see this warning:
On the other hand, if you want to remove the watermark, it will also be quite easy to create an account (although, of course, you can start without having one). Just click on the “x” at the top right and you will see a new recording window. Here you can modify the size of the capture area or move it, and you can also adjust special settings: such as hide / show the toolbar, hotkeys, etc.
To start and stop recording, you just need to press the red button. When you’re done, your video clip will be shown to you.
You can use the save icon to store your screencast as a video or GIF file, or use the share icon to upload it to YouTube, Vimeo, Drive, or Dropbox.
APowerSoft is a really very light program that will allow you to have some flexibility, for example: you will be able to capture the audio of the system, the microphone, both or neither. Although its editing capabilities will be limited if you do not purchase the paid version. Otherwise, if you want to do some other type of editing, you will have to use some other program on your computer. On the other hand, the tool is very agile to use and could be very useful to get out of a hurry or if it is not necessary to make too many changes before sharing it.
YouTube Live Streaming
If you have a YouTube channel, YouTube Creator Studio could be a great tool for recording your screen. But to do that you will have to use the live stream function. And although this is not the best option for everyone, it could be very useful in some cases. To start using YouTube Creator Studio as a screencasting tool, you should take a look at this tutorial.
Filmora Scrn is a dedicated screen recording software that was developed by Wondershare. It allows recording with two cameras (the screen and the webcam) and also offers different export options, in addition to editing tools. Some people prefer it because its interface is much cleaner than that of other competing applications. But since it is not a free program, it is not as accessible as the other methods mentioned here. Either way, if you are interested in specialized and easy-to-use screen recording software, you can see more details about Filmora scrn here.
Unlike most specialized programs, Camtasia is first a video editor and then a screen recorder. This program will allow you to access most of the editing and production options, which makes it an excellent alternative if you want to do more than just record your screen or if you plan to create different types of video. In addition, its interface is clean and easy to use.
Snagit is a program developed by TechSmith, the same creators of Camtasia. Although Snagit is not an all-in-one tool, it is an exclusive program for recording screens. And in this sense, it offers some very interesting functions such as the magic selection tool, which will automatically detect the areas to be recorded, as well as an editing panel where you can record your final videos. Notice: Snagit is a paid software.
CamStudio is a free program, but it is a slightly more outdated program with less compatibility than the other alternatives allow. The program is maintained by a single person and definitely does have some bugs that should be polished a bit. But if you are interested in trying it, it might be worth giving it a try. While CamStudio is not as “shiny” with some of the other options available, it is free and available for you to try.
Whether you’re creating videos for a small classroom, for several thousand followers, or just for entertainment, learning how to record your screen in Windows 10 will allow you to make a big difference. And depending on the features you are looking for, there are a wide variety of options available – for different types of needs – that will ensure your success creating great videos.
